Lest this discussion get framed as a religious moral issue, it is not. Punishment and revenge (standard religious prescriptions) are absolutely useless in dealing with child abuse, indeed REVENGE is in some respects the problem itself. Not to speak for others, but I suspect that most of us are approaching this not as a moral issues, but from a deep underlying sense that the temporary alleviation of one's own internal trauma cannot justify the potential of inflicting a lifetime of suffering on another human being.
